Watford Lions have been recognised by an independent charity regulator for their fundraising efforts.
The Lions Club International Foundation, set up by about 45,000 Lions Clubs across the British Isles and Ireland, has been given the highest four-star rating by Charity Navigator, after raising money for Haitians affected by the earthquake disaster there in January.
Watford and other Lions Clubs across the country have managed to collectively raise £250,000 for relief efforts, helping to pay for water, food and medical supplies, which are being distributed by Haiti Lions and Leo Clubs to a hospital and orphanage in the area.
Lord Mark Franklin, Watford Lions representative, said: “All the Lions have worked really hard to raise money to help the people of Haiti.
“Watford Lions has contributed £100 to the £250,000 raised, through a number of fundraising activities including raffling magnums of Champagne.
“We are glad to have been able to help the Haitians and will continue in our charitable endeavours. You can always count on Lions to help those in need.”
LCIF is partnering with shipping company Maersk, to ship tents, donated by the Lions Clubs of Sweden, and food donated by the World Food Programme, to Haiti free of charge.
While currently focusing on immediate needs and the continued provision of supplies, Lions Clubs are also developing, together with members from the local area, a long-term plan for reconstruction, projects including building a school and an ophthalmic clinic.
