Students from a Northwood School took part in an annual debating contest held by the European Youth Parliament last Thursday.

Merchant Taylors' School, along with 15 others from across the South East, debated issues including Climate Change, Human Rights and Nuclear Armament at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Westminster.

More than 140 students aged between 16 and 18 took part in a series of six debates throughout the day including one in French.

Glenys Kinnock, Foreign office minister, opened the event.

He said: “Today’s event has been a great success, and has been a wonderful opportunity for the students to take on the role of European diplomats. These matters are so important to them and their future.”

Haberdashers Askes School in Elstree and St Catherine's School in Guildford will go forward to the national final in Durham this September.
