Dacorum Borough Council to tackle littering

Litterers are being targeted by Dacorum Borough Council under a new scheme.

From April 1, in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1990, the council will being using its enforcement powers to issue Fixed Penalty Notices to people who feel it is acceptable to drop litter.

Litter-droppers can be taken to court and prosecuted if they do not pay the £75 fine incurred from the notice. The fine is reduced to £50 if paid within two weeks.

The council's enforcement officers will also be issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for dog fouling.

In the last national Government survey about living in Dacorum, 43 per cent of respondents said that clean streets were the most important factor in making the borough a good place to live and a further 29 per cent said that this was one of the things most in need of improvement.

About 36 per cent said that rubbish and litter lying around was the biggest anti-social behaviour problem in the borough.

Every year the council spends thousands of taxpayers’ money to clean Dacorum’s streets of sweet wrappers, crisp packets, cigarette butts, drinks cans and plastic bags.

To remind people to be responsible for their litter ahead of the campaign, there will be an interactive “Let's Tidy Dacorum Together" roadshow trailer in the Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead on Monday, March 22, between noon and 4pm.
