Mr and Mrs Sanders from Abbots Langley say they had their evening 'ruined' after their car was clamped in a Watford car park

An elderly couple from Abbots Langley say they had their evening “ruined” after their car was clamped in a Watford car park.

Pensioners Peter and Joan Sanders had been enjoying a performance of Noel Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs, as part of a relative’s birthday, on Friday, February 26.

They had parked their car in a T J Hughes car park, based near Clarendon Road, and on their return from the show found that their vehicle had been clamped. The couple say they displayed a ticket which covered them until 7am the next day.

However, clamping company Controlled Parking Services (CPS) says the couple’s ticket was face down so it was impossible for its employees to decipher whether or not the ticket was valid.

CPS says all vehicles are photographed when they are clamped and says it has a digital image which proves Mr and Mrs Sanders’ ticket could not be checked.

Mr Sanders, 82, a former parish councillor, of The Crescent, explained: “It was Joan’s sister’s birthday so we decided to go out and see a show at the Watford Palace Theatre.

“We parked in the T J Hughes car park, paid £3 for a ticket – which covered parking the car there until seven o’clock the following morning – and displayed it on the dashboard.

“We thought we had legitimately parked and paid to do so.”

Mrs Sanders, 82, a former nurse, said: “Luckily one of our party had a mobile phone on them to call the company to remove the clamps otherwise we would have been out in the cold all night.

“When two employees from CPS turned up, they demanded £125 to release our car – providing we paid in cash – or it would be £130 to pay by card.

“Peter showed that our ticket was still valid but the employee said we hadn’t displayed it correctly.

“But as far as we’re concerned, it was on the dashboard and showed the date and time the ticket was valid until.” The couple have contacted T J Hughes to dispute the charge, which advised them to contact CPS as the company “manages the car park”.

They claim they wrote to the company about a week ago but CPS, which operates a 21-day appeals process, says, as yet, it has received no written complaint or appeal.

Mrs Sanders said: “It ruined what was supposed to be a celebration and was a terrible end to the evening.”

Mr Sanders added: “We would like to get our money back – £125 isn’t a small amount, especially at our age – but if anything we’d like to warn Watford Observer readers, be wary of that car park.”

T J Hughes spokeswoman Michelle Begley said: “The car park is private land and managed on our behalf by CPS.

“We understand that the car park management company is currently talking to the customers to resolve this matter.”

Unforntunate, but if there is evidence that the ticket wasn't displayed, why blame the clampers. Maybe a discount could be considered.

The clamping company on turning up demanded £125. Even if it wasn't visible properly, it's still a valid ticket as proven to be. and so at least a reduction should have been offered.

The pure greed by these ignorant laughing clamping cowboys makes us all sick and shame on TJ Hughes for employing these bandits.

There's definately a gap in the market for an ethical, educated and fair clamping company.

Jeez two weeks pension just to remove a clamp.

The last time I will be using T J Hughes may possibly be actually the last time. If they are using this bunch of thugs on wheels - come on, you have to have at least a borderline personality disorder to be a clamper in the first place, then T J Hughes is ultimately responsible for them. Saying that CPC 'manage' the car-park and then sloping shoulders and denying any responsibility is unacceptable.

Trying to contact the clamping company, let alone getting any reasonable answer (or any answer at all), or to hope for any flexibility or sympathy from them is whistling into the wind. They don't care. They never have and they never will.

They deny having received any communication. No! Really? Now why am I not surprised? They couldn't be lying, could they? Perish the thought. After all, clamping companies are well known for their honesty and integrity.

So, T J Hughes, is this goodbye? It might be from quite a few people. So step in, make a phone call, and do the right thing. Just a phone call. Have you ever heard of goodwill? Customer relations? Plain, old fashioned compassion? Time will tell.

I hope that the Observer keeps us up to date on this, as some stories, instead of being followed up (Yes, we do want to know what ultimately happens) just seem to disappear into newspaper limbo.

Talking of newspaper limbo, what happened to the Mr Elvin of Westfield School story? WO reported around 11:00 this morning that he had been sacked, story spiked by 11:30, and nothing since.

If the car was clamped with no one about, then company policy might be that details are entered on a PDA and sent to head office, if when coming out, they then remove, it could leave the operatives open to a charge of bribery? All clampers should have a mobile with photo tech. They could have then sent picture to head office, as the purchase time would have been on it.

Having been clamped a couple of times myself in recent years, although not at TJ Hughes, it is galling to have to pay a large sum to get released. But the couple need to accept responsibility for not having displayed their ticket properly, its hardly the clampers fault that they could not see it was valid as it was upside down. Also not saying this is what the couple did but how do the clampers know that the valid ticket they were shown when they came to take the clamp off was not given to the couple by another driver as a way to get out of paying the fine? The clampers are easy targets but this just sounds like yet another story common in todays world of someone not wanting to take responsibility for getting something wrong

Fruitbat66 (love the handle!)

First of all, I wish the best of luck to the Saunders.

As for news limbo, be of good cheer. The reporting of the subject of the sacked teacher has come out of limbo and is now to be found in the WO.

It came out yesterday and is currently number eight in the 'charts.' I wonder if it might make number one. Thank you Watford Observer.

Now, T J Hughes. Have you made that phone call yet? Local authorities often bin the fine if you can provide proof that you paid for the ticket in the first place.

But, of course, it's not your responsibility is it. It's that of CPS, isn't it? We all hope that you do the right thing. You don't have to apologise of course, just get the pensioners reimbursed.

Your call. (No pun intended.)

Why is this even a story ? Their ticket was unfortunatly upside down so they have to pay the fine. Bad luck on them but they should have checked it was displayed correctly. You cannot blame the clampers !

This is the problem with people in this country they have been conditioned or brain washed to a degree to accept this sort of behaviour as the norm and acceptable when it clearly isnt.
is holding a persons car to ransom in exchange for an excessive amount of money morally or ethically the right thing to do or correct way of going about things? the people in question purchased a ticket fullstop, at the end of the day if the car parks operators had a different method of charging, i.e a pay barrier method then this would neednt of happened,
is £125-£130 a proportionate fee for leaving a small piece of paper accidentally upside down? get real people, grow small gonads and challenge these menaces, they outlawed clampers in scotland lets call for it here !

Crazyfrog the problem with people in this country actually is that they often wont own up to their own mistakes. Yes a valid ticket may have been bought but it wasnt displayed properly which is also condition of being allowed to park, annoying yes but the couple only have themselves to blame. As to the charge, its supposed to be a deterrant more than anything and the clampers have done nothing wrong. Surely the bigger gonads belong to those who admit their mistakes rather than those who wish to pass the blame onto someone else

I cannot believe comments such as these. Is this a comment of someone that works for a clamping company?
I too have been clamped in TJ Hughes. The sign at the entrance at that time had paper stuck to it with sellotape. We purchased a ticket but were not aware the terms and conditions had changed. Two clampers turned up, one was clearly not a registered clamper and refused to show ID. £120 for an upside down ticket is absurd and is just a way of robbing people. Why doesn’t the car park have a proper barrier with a pay on exit ticket machine? Then there would be no need for clampers and everyone would pay the correct amount! (This was the way it was with Clements an honest and much loved company). Since being clamped myself I have avoided purchasing anything from TJ Hughes. This is my recommendation to anyone who is horrified by this story. If enough people show their disgust then surely changes will be made.

Firstly I dont have anything to do with the clamping or car parking industry, secondly there shouldnt need to be a sign up in a car park advising drivers to display their tickets the right way up as a) its common sense and b) its common practise in every single pay and display car park all over the world. Why should car park operators install barriers etc. when pay and display is a perfectly good simple means of getting drivers to pay for their parking. The point is that this couple instead of running to the press should just have admitted they made a mistake, the only thing to be horrified about is this being yet another example oh so common in this country of people wanting to pass the blame for their own mistakes onto someone else

We are all Human or atleast i hope we are and as such make mistakes, and this is what these clampers are waiting for, if you think £125-130 is not a disgusting extortionate amount for a VALID ticket to be accidentally placed upside down then all i can say is your a very harsh man who needs to open his eyes a bit more, people will vote with their feet i already have.,and i have warned lots of friends and family about the extortion trap that they could fall in here, they outlawed this behaviour in scotland and they will here soon.
