Watford Borough Council asks: 'should town continue with black and white taxis?'

Watford’s traditional black and white taxis have been a part of the community for many years, their distinctive colour scheme instantly recognisable to passengers.

But that could soon change under plans proposed by Watford Borough Council.

Since 2005 the council has changed the make-up of its taxi fleet, with fewer saloon cars being licensed and more London-style cabs and people-carriers being approved.

Reluctant to enforce colour scheme changes on these vehicles, costing up to £1,000 a time, the council opted instead to fit all vehicles with roof and door signs bearing the council crest.

Its licensing committee members will soon decide if it is fair that saloon car owners are forced to carry on the tradition.

Councillor Jan Brown, committee chairman, said: “Now that all taxis have got the council’s logo on the front doors and highly visible white licence plates on the rear, it seems unfair that saloon car operators have to go to the trouble and expense of painting their cars black and white.”

The council’s licensing committee will decide on July 5, this year, whether to end the licensing condition.

The council, which is launching a public consultation on the issue, is seeking written comments or emails to licensing@watford.gov.uk by April 9.

Why bother with the black and whites anyway? private hire companies are far better, and they are just as reliable, and most of the private hire companies have cleaner and better cars. Most of the time I dont bother with the black and whites, a few minutes wait for a decent car suits me.

Watford should stop having black and white taxis. By doing this we will have better looking cars on the road, less smelly!! Drivers can purchase a new vehicle more often without the fear of additional costs of spraying it b/w. Makes sense in this continous recession. Well done Watford council, go on ged rid of these black/whites asap!!

As a regular taxi user, I will be glad to see the end of black/white taxis. Speaking to many drivers, they are lumbered with the same car for so long because they cannot afford spraying the car every so often. The new image of the town will improve with normal coloured cars. Black and white is in the past, time to move on!!!! This is 2010!!!!!!

As a member of Watford community I do believe that it is time for us to move on, not stick to something for such a long period, by changing black and white cabs it will benefit the public and the drivers, Because these cars are not only used as taxi but also are used for their personal use, this will also reduce the amount of money being spend on cars to make them B/W.
This will provide improved financial and safety changes for the drivers in their profession. Whereas Watford community will see Quality cars around Watford roads, making Watford look even contemporary.
