A FIRST World War Memorial dedicated to the residents of Watford Fields in Central Watford is being targeted for refurbishment and a clean up.

The Memorial in Lammas Road remembers more than 60 Watford residents from the area who died in World War One.

Now the local Liberal Democrat councillors for the area are pressing for a clean up of it and an enhancement so that it respects the sacrifices of these who died.

County Councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst said: "While the memorial is not too bad it could do with a spring clean' and the grass area around it needs refurbishment. Also many of the paving slabs leading to and around the memorial are broken and uneven."

The Councillor has now arranged for these to be re-laid and brought back up to standard within the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, his Watford Borough Council colleagues have asked for a deep clean of the memorial and removal of rubbish in the area.

Councillor Chris Leslie said: " We are working together to get improvements made and make this a really important local feature. It needs a general clean up and the paving re-laid around it, as well as the grass being tidied and repaired, said Councillor Chris Leslie.
