Thank heavens that the Hertsmere Labour Group looks set to get a new Leader.

Councillor Frank Ward's shocking outburst at the end of another bad night for his party at last week's elections must have marked the lowest of many low points in his local party's recent history. It was a relief that Tories were joined by Labour Councillors who walked out in disgust at his words.

Some of us will never be friends and many of us will not agree on policies or the way we approach issues, we do, as your local representatives, have a responsibility to residents to make this work. Lower and lower turnouts prove that people don't care enough about the system. Councillor Ward himself was elected on just 350 votes in Kenilworth which once again recorded the lowest turnout across the borough. Just 20 per cent. But that turnout along with his reaction is a wake up call to Hertsmere Borough Council and members of all parties. I am glad that already councillors are sitting up and taking notice of the message we are being sent by residents. I do not take my re-election for granted in Elstree. I will try harder to get on with those with whom I have a differing opinion, if only to prove to the many people who refuse to vote because of a lack of confidence in us, that we take the business of running this council seriously. May I thank all those who came out to vote for me at last weeks local elections. Your support is very much appreciated.
