WITH their Zurich Premiership status virtually secured, Saracens have begun preparing for next season by recruiting Australian centre Rod Kafer on a one-year contract from Leicester Tigers.

The 31-year-old former Wallaby, capped 12 times by his country, announced this week he is to leave Leicester Tigers at the end of the season after two years as player-coach at Welford Road.

The deal to bring Kafer to Vicarage Road has been orchestrated by Sarries chief executive Mark Sinderberry, who made him one of his primary targets after spending seven years with the utility back at Super 12 giants ACT Brumbies.

With Tim Horan set to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career, Tom Shanklin, with one-year left on his contract and rumoured to be pondering a move to Cardiff and Ben Johnston's contract set to expire at the end of the season, Kafer's arrival will be a welcome addition to the Sarries midfield.
