HUNDREDS of primary school pupils in Hertfordshire could soon be entitled to school dinners following a change in state benefit rules.
The changes, due to take effect next week and set to have a knock-effect on Hertfordshire Council Council grants, will mean more children are eligible for free school meals.
In the past, only parents in receipt of income support or income-based jobseeker's allowance were eligible.
Criteria has now been extended to include those getting child tax credit, with an annual taxable income of no more than £13,230 and not currently receiving working tax credit.
About 15,000 children, among the 180,000 pupils in Hertfordshire, are currently eligible for free school lunches.
Executive member for Children, Schools and Families Robert Gordon said: "These are national changes which means we are are able to support more children by providing them with a daily free school meal."
Parents and carers who are eligible for free school meals may also be entitled to clothing grants for school uniforms, assistance with music fees and16-19 learner support.
Saver Cards may be available and, in some cases, assisted transport.
