A YOUNG Watford mathematician has won recognition following his success in a nationwide maths challenge.

Christopher Rayment, who attends Knutsford School, in Knutsford Avenue, Watford, has won a bronze award from The Mathematical Association, following his success in the finals of the Primary Mathematics Challenge (PMC) held in February.

Christopher was one of 111 pupils in the country to win an award after his mathematics skills shone from more than 62,000 entries in the first heat of the competition, staged in November.

The PMC is aimed at the top 60 per cent of primary school pupils aged up to 11 years old.

Deputy headteacher at Knutsford School Mr Kevin Sullivan said: "We place great emphasis on taking children to their potential at Knutsford.

"As well as having super teachers, we have invested considerable sums of money in a number of comprehensive computer programs which support the teaching of maths.

"I really was very impressed with Chris' achievement."

The next PMC is set to take place in November 2003.
