ST ALBANS celebrates 450 years of democracy this weekend and a host of activities are planned to make it a time to remember.

On Saturday St Albans players The Company of Ten will be performing Martyrs and Charters, its abridged history of the city told in mime and music.

Performances will be at 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.45pm in the Civic Square and at noon and 1pm outside the Town Hall.

St Albans City Band will also be in Civic Square for much of Saturday while there will also be a series of Discover Tudor Cookery demonstrations at the Museum of St Albans in Hatfield Road.

The farmers market is on Sunday while entertainment will come from the St Albans Morrismen and the Cottonmill Clog Morris.

Monday marks the official anniversary of the granting of the Charter and celebrations will begin at 10.30am when Mayor Keith Stammers releases 450 balloons from the Clock Tower.

At 11pm the Mayor will proclaim the story of the 1553 Charter from Ottaways balcony in Market Place before joining the procession to the Museum of St Albans to see the Charter on display.

Between noon and 2pm everyone is invited to the a picnic in Civic Square. Music will be provided by live Country and Western, jazz and English folk bands.

And finally Batchwood Hall is hosting a Charter Charity Celebration Gala from 8pm.

Entry is £5 with all money raised going to the Mayor's charity, Grove House Hospice.
