MEMBERS of Abbots Langley Parish Council have expressed their disappointment at the lack of competition in the forthcoming local elections.

Several of the councillors have been re-elected without their position being contested, leaving them upset at the level of political apathy amongst Abbots Langley residents.

Councillor Betty O'Neill said: "I am very sad and feel it is a very sad day for democracy that people with other political views are practically disenfranchised in this village.

"There is no one to vote for meaning that some councillors are elected already as no one is opposing them."

Only two councillors will have to fight to be re-elected Councillor Mike Morton is being contested by Mr Bruce Prochnik for the Primrose Hill area and Councillor Geoff Emery is up against Ms Joanne Cox for the Bedmond area.

Council Chairman Keith Williams said: "We need people to say whether we are doing a good job or not.

"It is not very good for this area if people cannot demonstrate this through the ballot box."

At the final meeting of this Council last Monday, councillors also gave their thanks to Councillor Rosemary Bow for her support over the years as she stands down after 12 years.

Other councillors standing down are Councillors Sue Featherstone, Angela Laval, Keith Peutherer, Bob Hall and Elizabeth Taylor.
