THIRTY-six candidates will be fighting it out for the 11 seats up for grabs on Harlow District Council when voters go to the polls on Thursday, May 1.

In all wards the candidate (councillor) who polled the fewest votes last year is up for re-election. Only one councillor, Labour stalwart John Cave, who has served for 32 years, is retiring.

Three former Labour councillors Jean Clark, Feroz Khan and Derek Eardley are standing for re-election this year, as is former Liberal Democrat councillor Audrey Curran.

In the Sumners and Kingsmoor ward, Conservative Group leader Andrew Johnson has to fight for his seat while Liberal Democrat council chairman Nick Macy, who represents Mark Hall, will be fighting for a seat in the Labour stronghold of Little Parndon and Hare Street.

Seventeen local seats are up for re-election on East Herts District Council with the authority facing a reshuffle as 48 of the 50 seats are up for grabs.

No elections will be held in the Much Hadham and Great Amwell wards as council leader Mike Carver and Derek Mayes are the only candidates in each ward. Four local councillors have decided to stand down, including Bishop's Stortford councillors Bernard Engel, Ron Madell and Carolyn Woodman, and Sawbridgeworth councillor Frank Clay.

Mr Clay, who celebrated his 90th birthday last December, has decided to retire after 27 years of service.

He first became a councillor in 1960 on Sawbridgeworth town council before East Herts Council was formed in 1974. He was council chairman from 1985 to 1988.

Mr Clay has been presented with a framed certificate to honour his years of commitment.

Current council make up is: Conservative 32; Liberal Democrats 9; Labour 7; Independent 2.

All 44 seats on Uttlesford District Council are up for grabs, with 23 candidates fighting for the ten local seats in the Citizen's area. It is the first time since 1999 that all the seats have come up for re-election.

Across the district six councillors are retiring, including Great Hallingbury Independent Andy Streeter, after 41 years.
