Three shops in Barnet have been fined for selling alcohol to children following an undercover operation by Barnet Council officers.

The licensees of the shops appeared at Barnet Magistrates Court and were found guilty of selling vodka alcopop to a 16-year-old girl.

The girl had volunteered to attempt to buy the alcohol under the supervision of trading standards officers.

Neena Thakrar and Arun Raval of Kemptons, 272 East Barnet Road, New Barnet, were fined £100 and £200 respectively and ordered to pay costs of £100 each. Mesut Cavus, the licensee of Oakleigh Supermarket, 241/3 Oakleigh Road North, Whetstone, was fined £60 with costs of £75. His assistant Huseiyn Bogazkaya was fined £200 with £120 costs.

Councillor Brian Salinger, who has responsibility for environmental health, said: "We regard selling alcohol to children as a serious offence and we will always prosecute. We will continue to work closely with the police, visit shops and gather evidence against those who persist in flouting the law."
