Ambulance crews in the borough were issued with stab-proof vests last week.

The vests will be carried in ambulances at all times to protect paramedics from the growing number of attacks on crews in London.

As many as 562 physical assaults were reported by London ambulance crews from April 2001 to March 2002, along with 1,441 incidents of verbal abuse.

The made-to-measure vests, costing up to £400 each, are issued in two colours, dark green and fluorescent yellow, and have a personalised serial number. The vests have minimal bullet-proof capability. The vests will be worn in situations where ambulance crews feel there could be danger.

Station officer Guy Dunk, of Friern Barnet ambulance station in Colney Hatch Lane, said: "I know the staff are pleased to have them and I am 100 per cent behind the idea.

"But it is also sad in a way. The way things are going, it is necessary to protect our crews."
