HERTSMERE member John Nolan has died.

The Labour councillor for Borehamwood Cowley Hill passed away at Barnet Hospital during the early hours of Thursday, April 3.

Born in County Longford, Ireland, Mr Nolan moved to England to work as a railwayman. He later became a Union Official with British Rail.

He was elected to the then Hertsmere District Council at its formation in May 1973 and served as Mayor of Hertsmere from 1995 to 1996.

He also served on Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council from 1969 and was a former Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood.

He leaves a widow, Margaret, a son, daughter and four grandchildren.

Head of paid service at Hertsmere Borough Council Ron Higgins said: "John served this council for over 30 years and was a great friend to many people here. He worked tirelessly for the community and will be sorely missed."

His funeral was held at the St John Fisher Church and St Thomas More Church in Rossington Avenue, Borehamwood, on Wednesday. He was buried at Allum Lane Cemetery.

His family have asked that there be no flowers, but friends of Mr Nolan are invited to make a donation to the local branch of MENCAP.

Cheques should be made payable to MENCAP and sent to the Co-operative Funeral Service, 60-62 Shenley Road, Borehamwood WD6 1AE. The account will be kept open for eight weeks.
