I am writing in response to the letter by Alan Chew (Sex shop poses no threat to community, Times Letters, April 3).

He feels people should not be concerned about the sex shop in East Barnet Road as nothing is visible from the pavement.

I think Mr Chew needs to understand the reality about sex shops.

If this shop receives a licence, it will be able to sell R18 videos hard-core pornography.

No society in history has been able to survive for long without a strong moral code, and immorality corrupts individuals and destroys societies.

It has been claimed that pornography will keep potential rapists and murderers off the streets.

Far from doing this, porn encourages the state of mind which makes violent sexual crimes possible.

I agree with Mr Chew that newsagents should not be allowed to sell adult books. However, the much greater danger will come from licensed sex shops.
