A NEW road safety campaign aimed at promoting common sense and courtesy on the road has been launched by Essex County Council.

The Share the Road campaign aimed at all road users from pedestrians and cyclists to motorcyclists, car drivers and lorry drivers encourages people to be more considerate to other road users.

County council chairman Anthony Peel said: "The Government has set robust targets to reduce the rate of casualties and fatalities on the roads.

"It is important for everyone to take a positive approach toward preventing accidents and saving lives.

"If all road users make an effort to be sensible and courteous, everyone's journey could be an altogether safer and better experience."

Road Safety Minister David Jamieson welcomed the launch and added: "The Government's THINK! campaign is about all of us using our roads safely, whether we are driving, walking, cycling or using public transport.

"It's vital that people accept that they are sharing the road with many different types of transport, and that they consider how to share it safely."
