POLICE are warning motorists to switch their fog lights off so they don't dazzle other drivers and cause accidents this winter.

Fog lights can reduce the effectiveness of brake lights and cause safety problems for other motorists who might be disorientated by them after weather conditions improve.

Driving with fog lights on when the conditions do not warrant their use carries a fixed fine of £30.

Inspector Peter Brookes from Hertfordshire Road Policing said: "The strength of fog lights can mask the visibility of normal brake lights.

"All road users have to take responsibility for their vehicles and ensure fog light are only tuned on when conditions justify their use."
