Rumours are rife around Barnet Market that it is not paying its way, and that the owners, Nigel and Melanie Walsh, are trying to find a way of advancing plans for developing the site (Market dreams', Times Group, August 15).
Barnet Market is a very valuable amenity and an important asset to the neighbourhood.
Shoppers come not only from Barnet, but also from neighbouring towns, to buy goods which cannot be bought elsewhere.
This applies especially to the needs of mature people.
These items are not readily available in high street shopping centres because shop owners prefer profit to service.
As it claims to represent the interests of residents, Barnet Council should step in to save the market from extinction.
