IT was burned to the ground in November 1999 because of an electrical fault, but this week Knutsford School's new building was officially opened.
Classes at the school in Knutsford Avenue, Watford, have been taking place in PortaKabins for more than two years after their school building was destroyed.
Headmaster Mr Brian Nicholson said: "Luckily, the dining hall and the upper junior block were saved.
"But we are extremely grateful because it is has given us the opportunity to have an updated building.
"The size of the block is the same, with 16 classrooms."
The new building has been operational since January this year.
But yesterday (Thursday) it was officially opened and a plaque revealed by the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Simon Bowes Lyon.
Watford's new civic mayor Councillor Sheila Jones, County Councillor Robert Gordon and chairman of Hertfordshire County Council Robert Gray were among other local dignitaries to attend the event.
The school teaches pupils from aged five to 11.
