March 30, 2001 15:41: A LOCAL secondary school will take steps to promote literacy within the community this week, having received an award of £3,000 from a bank's national education sponsorship programme.

Bushey Meads School in Coldharbour Lane is one of 102 schools across the UK to be awarded funds from Barclays New Futures this year one of the UK's largest education sponsorship programmes to assist in the development of its imaginative community project, Living Library.

Devised and led by the school's pupils in years 12 and 13, Living Library will see the creation of a number of after-school activities, designed to encourage young people to make use of the resources available to them at their own school library.

The school's development manager, Mrs Karen Ainley, said: "The Living Library project will give primary pupils the opportunity to enjoy our facilities, and enable interaction between our pupils and the younger children."

Barclays New Futures is run in collaboration with Community Service Volunteers (CVS) a national charity that provides advisory support and educational expertise to the project.

Blue Peter presenter and member of Barclays New Futures 2001 judging panel, Konnie Huq, said: "Congratulations to Bushey Meads School. These awards enable young people to make a positive difference, while having a lot of fun helping others."
