December 15, 2000 11:41: THE names of the first firefighters to tackle blazes in Rickmansworth are being sought to help restore a plaque in their memory.
Three Rivers District Councillor Mrs Barbara Lamb is appealing for information about the men who worked at the town's old fire station in High Street when it opened in 1891.
The names of the men were engraved on a commemorative plaque outside the building now a take-away after the station moved to Rectory Road.
However, as the outside of the building was painted, the names were obliterated.
Councillor Lamb began her quest for the names during her year as chairman of the council in 1998.
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue is checking its records for the names but anyone who may have information can contact Councillor Lamb on 01923 720845.
