Schoolchildren and residents joined forces at the weekend to give a new look to a changing pavilion at a Borehamwood park.

Around 50 people helped Hertsmere Borough Council parks staff to paint a mural on the outside of the pavilion at Kenilworth Park, in Kenilworth Drive, at the Community Painting Day on Saturday.

The revamp of the pavilion is part of a £50,000 improvement project at the park, which has also included the installation of a new children's play area, and with tree planting, permanent football posts and footpath and drainage work due to be completed by November.

Under the direction of Aaron Niblett, a council contract monitoring officer, the helpers painted the mural, of a striker shooting at a goal, between 10.30am and 3.30pm. They used paints and brushes supplied by the council's parks and amenities unit.

The council had asked pupils in years three and four at nearby Kenilworth First School to submit designs, and the work of Barclay Ballard was chosen as the basis of the mural, with the other ideas fed in. A football scene was seen as appropriate for the pavilion, which is used by football players to change.

Borough council landscape project officer Dave Clarke hopes the community involvement and colourful mural will deter vandals from damaging the pavilion, which was covered in graffiti before the face-lift.

He added: 'It looks fantastic and the day went really well. It was nice to have so many helpers.

'It is very bright and a big improvement on the building.

'Everybody drew their own face in a crowd scene, so it is quite individual.'

Work at the park started two months ago, and is part of the council's four-year, £2.5million Parks Capital Programme to improve parks across the borough, which is due to end in November.
