A PETROL station attendant was hit by a car driven by escaping fuel thieves on Sunday.

The 58-year-old St Albans man was working at the Shell garage in Hatfield Road, Smallford, at 8.25pm when a white D-reg Vauxhall Astra pulled into the forecourt.

One of the men in the car got out and filled up the tank with just under £40 worth of unleaded petrol. The attendant suspected they were going to drive off without paying and went out on to the forecourt.

The man filling up the tank jumped back into the car's passenger seat and shouted, 'Go! Go!' to the driver.

As the driver sped past the attendant, the passenger opened his door, knocking the man to the floor, before driving off towards St Albans along Hatfield Road.

The driver was described as a white male, 19 to 20 years old with short, dark hair, wearing a blue jacket. The passenger was described as white, 19 to 20 years old, 5ft 8ins to 5ft 9ins tall, of slim build, with short dark hair and wearing a blue anorak.
