Life in Borehamwood during the war wasn't fun very often - so people remember the good times fondly.

Since the Borehamwood Times printed a photograph of the residents of Meadow Road celebrating VE Day last month, people from all over the town have been contacting its offices with their memories of how the town survived six years of blood, sweat and tears.

This week another photograph of a VE Day street party, taken in Cardinal Avenue, was brought into the offices by Winfred Boote, from Bullhead Road.

The picture belonged to Mrs Boote's sister, Norah Hamblin, who spent the war working as a cook at the then-new Hillside School, and lived in the town until her husband came home after serving with the army's Royal Engineers.

'The party in the photograph was a good one, all the children and the grown-ups enjoyed themselves, but there weren't many men about then, they were all still waiting to come home,' she said.

'It was quite a nice place to live during the war. We all had a good relationship at the school; I knew a lot of people there. I would have been there when the photo was taken: I can recognise a few of the people in it. Borehamwood wasn't built up then like it is now, it was mostly farmland at the time,' said Mrs Hamblin.
