THE first fun day to be held at Garston's Orbital Community Centre for several years has been billed as a resounding success.

Organisers of the event, held in the car park of the centre in Haines Way, were delighted that at least 200 people came through the gates to enjoy some fun in the sun.

Opened by Mayor Dorothy Thornhill and Mayoress Tricia Gollop, the event got off to a colourful start with a parade of the costumes worn by centre users at the recent Rainbow Festival.

There were also displays by the Watford Baton Twirlers, a jazzercise display, a pop quiz and the ever-popular bouncy castle.

Groups that use the centre on a regular basis were invited to raise money and members of the community volunteered to man stalls to boost cash for the centre itself.

Among the attractions were a tombola, a coconut shy, painted pots and glasses, name the teddy and a lucky dip.

North Watford Traffic Police also brought along a state-of-the-art motorcycle, a feature which went down particularly well, judging by the amount of children surrounding it.

The event was one of a series held at community centres in north Watford in an attempt to reach out to local people.

Organiser Mrs Maureen Philby said: "Today has been extremely well-attended and this is something we intend on making a regular event.

"Everyone has worked hard to make it such a success and I would like to say a big thank you to the duty attendants at the community centres who have worked so hard for this day.

"We will be getting together next month to plan for next year's event so we can make it even bigger and better."
