GRAHAM TAYLOR was quick to admit to the fortunate nature of Watford's victory on Saturday but feels there is more to come from his team as the players knit together

"We had moments of good fortune through the game. Bradford had some good chances earlier on and I think, had we gone behind at that stage, it would have been hard. They missed their opportunities but that is not our fault," he said.

"But we then got better and scored what I thought was a good goal and when Bradford changed their formation, we had a few problems until we tightened it up. It was one of those games when either team could have won 1-0. It was our turn. That is the impartial view but I'm not impartial so I am bloody pleased we won.

"I don't think Bradford were so much in charge. I am sure Paul is disappointed that they did not get more out of the game but, from my own personal point of view, we had a team that showed five changes with perhaps four players making their home debuts, plus a change of formation, we had only worked on since Thursday morning.

"We had combinations of players who have not played together while I try to sort out what is my best team. So in that respect, I am quite pleased. These results help even if we were a bit fortunate, because it will take a little bit of time to gel together. As much as you work on the training ground, you need to look at things in a competitive situation.

"For instance, I don't think Steve Palmer has played right back for me before. I needed to look at that. Yates and Millen is a new combination. The little boy Robinson, who I think is going to be a good player, has got a chance and can say to himself: 'Hey I've got a chance of being his first choice'.

"Hazan is a player who I am still coming to terms with in trying to decide which is his best position.

"Then there is the partnership of Hyde and Easton, who is only just 20 and improving all the time. Of course I have this boy Johnson, who has not played yet this season but is a very good player.

"In the last three years since I have been at the club, we have not seen the ball attacked in the penalty area, as it was for our goal today. We have put a number of crosses in but they do not mean anything unless they are attacked and the forward makes sure he is first to the ball. That is one aspect of our play we have been very short of over the last couple of years. The goal was a bit of a throwback to the goals we scored in my previous era here."

Taylor enjoyed the irony of winning games while still searching for the ideal team combination.

"A six-point start is good for confidence while I know things need settling down. It is good to win games while I am trying to find out my best team. The irony is that when I find it out, we'll probably start losing.

"With 30 minutes to go, the injection of pace and craft from Rosenthal and the pace of Tony Daley, who cannot be expected to be at his old best, did help. Tony's pace got the ball and got it out to Micah Hyde for the cross and the goal. Having Robert Page on the bench was also good.

"I don't expect any of the players to be happy about being out of the team. I have 21 players I have kept with me right up to this morning. I have no hidden agenda. I am trying to find a team to get as many good results as possioble.

"If you leave your club captain out and people like Ronny Rosenthal out, people know there are no favourites.

"Yet people like little Gibbsy have not see the light of day. I know that lad is there for me when he is needed and the Watford supporters know that as well. They know that if I put Nigel Gibbs out now he would not let us down, yet he has not seen a first-team place having been in the team last season.

"I have to know that in my own mind, the team and formation is going to give us the best chance of winning. We went tight at the end with five at the back. Palmer and Robinson were told not to push on forward. Bradford never got another chance after that. Beagrie had been giving us a few problems before. So Robert has sat on the bench and come on for the last 20 minutes and his contribution has been just as important for us as Rosenthal's and Daley's.

"More and more managers at a club like Watford have to use their squad. I keep telling the players that I will need at least 20 of them this season."
