A TINY baby born four months premature was fighting for his life yesterday (Thursday) after amazing doctors with his will to live.

Adam Johnson weighed just 1lb 2oz when he was delivered at Watford General Hospital on Sunday, January 18.

From there he was transferred to a specialised intensive care unit at Hillingdon Hospital, where his incredible fight for life continues.

Father Mr David Johnson, 25, of Maple Court, Garston, said his son was given little or no chance of survival when he was born.

He said: "He is in a critical condition. But he is a real battler.

"It is a miracle he has got this far. Staff at the hospital told us they have never heard of a baby this small surviving.

"He is holding his own but his lungs collapsed earlier in the week.

"He is 12 days old now and we have got to be hopeful that he will pull through."

His wife, Janette, went to Watford General Hospital with stomach pains and staff quickly realised she was in labour.

The couple have a five-year-old daughter, Angela.

Ms Liz Leaning, spokesman for Bliss, a charity that provides support to parents of premature babies said: "It is not unknown for babies this young to survive."

"Obviously with each day he survives the prognosis improves although it does vary from baby to baby.

"Generally babies born this early need to be kept warm and moist. They will also need help with their breathing because the lungs are not fully developed."

BLISS recently donated equipment to the baby care unity at Hillingdon Hospital which monitors the amount of oxygen in the blood.
