Excellence award for crematorium

WEST Herts Crematorium has become the first business in Hertfordshire to win an award for excellence in management standards from Investors in People.

The crematorium was recently re-accredited with Investors in People status, and assessors recommended that the organisation fulfilled the criteria for the Award for Leadership and Management.

The Crematorium demonstrated its management and leadership skills through job swaps between staff in different departments, helping to create a more flexible workforce.

It has been part of a training and development scheme introduced in recent years to help the facility meet its service standards.

The organisation was presented with its award by John Collier, of Business Link Hertfordshire, at an Investors in People awards ceremony at Sopwell House, St Albans.

Stephen Brown, manager and registrar at the crematorium, said: "We are really delighted with this award.

“Through the job-swaps staff have been able to experience aspects of the organisation that are new to them, which has in turn enabled us to improve our service to residents and provide caring support at this difficult time in their lives."

The crematorium opened in 1959 and is run by a committee of councillors from five constituent authorities in Hertfordshire - Three Rivers District Council, Watford Borough Council, Dacorum Borough Council, St Albans City and District Council, and Hertsmere Borough Council.

The crematorium also holds a Charter Mark for excellence in customer service, and a National Training Award.
