WORK is progressing on a new school in Garston, which will open in September 2005.

Berrygrove Primary and Nursery School will be the name for the new school being created by the amalgamation of Meriden Primary, Lea Farm Junior and Garston Infants in Watford.

The new name was selected by the governing body after weeks of consultation with pupils and parents at the three existing schools.

The name Berrygrove has long been the name for the woodland around the Munden estate on which the school stands.

Chris Cronda, who will head up the new school, said: "We are delighted with the new name as it evokes a strong sense of history and solidarity, but of course it also represents a fresh start for all.

"We are planning to plant a berry grove within the school grounds as part of the landscaping work around the new building."

Executive member for Education, Robert Gordon, said: "The new school building will house eight classrooms with accessible facilities, including disabled toilets, a group teaching room, ICT suite and nursery. It will draw on the strengths of the existing schools and extend the range of opportunities already on offer to pupils."

Additionally, parts of the existing Lea Farm and Garston school building are also being refurbished and a new car park is being put in place.

The uniform for Berrygrove pupils has also been decided. Pupils will wear navy trouser or skirts, white polo shirts and maroon sweatshirts.
