A COMPETITION encouraging residents to take up their trowels and get into their gardens has been launched by a north Watford councillor.

Councillor Steve Rackett hopes his competition to find the best-kept garden in north Watford will encourage residents to keep their front gardens blooming for the rest of the summer.

He said attractive gardens can have a positive effect on local house prices and help discourage crime.

The Green Party councillor has got together with residents associations to launch the competition, and winning residents will receive garden vouchers from the Horticultural Trades Association, which can be spent in garden centres.

Councillor Rackett said: "Some people do make an effort, whether they have a terraced house with potted plants, window boxes and hanging baskets, or whether they have a semi-detached and a little more room.

"I want to encourage those who are currently have some sort of display, and inspire others to help improve the neighbourhood. It really does make a difference to walk along a street and see a bit of colour."

Councillor Rackett praised the efforts of residents so far and said: "It is true that with limited space in a terraced house and the arrival of wheelie bins and recycling boxes, some people have not got as much room as they would like to do something, but nevertheless, I am pleased to see people are prepared to overcome even these challenges, and even the smallest garden has a beneficial effect on wildlife, encouraging butterflies and bees."
