New path signals safer school route

Kingsley Primary School pupils helped open a new footpath which will make their walk to class safer and easier.

The new 210-metre path, designed by Croydon Council, runs alongside the tram track between Ampere Way tram stop and Purley Way and was officially opened last Wednesday.

The path, funded by Transport for London (TfL) as part of its programme to promote the health and environmental benefits of walking, gives residents living in Mitcham Road and Purley Way direct access to the tram.

Before the path was built anyone wanting to walk to or from the tram stop had to travel the length of Ampere Way, use a subway and a set of steps over the Purley Way bridge and then head north along Purley Way, a total detour of more than 600 metres.

It is expected around 90 pupils a day will use the footpath.
