'Baldrick' Actor Tony Robinson in Watford to launch Labour MP Claire Ward's election campaign

Tony Robinson appeared at Watford Trade Union Hall tonight, to help incumbent MP Claire Ward officially launch her re-election campaign.

The actor and television presenter, famous for his appearance as Baldrick in the comedy series Blackadder, and more recently the historical documentary Time Team, spoke to the full hall in Woodford Road.

“Claire is a mate of mine,” he said “I've got an enormous amount of respect for her, and she's a real human being. I only campaign for people if I can convince my mum to vote for.

“Real politics takes place in the constituencies, school governors, neighbourhood watch, trade unions, that is what politics really is.

“This is an extremely exciting election, we can talk politics, rather than slagging off people which is all rather tedious.

“If I can help in any way then I will. On our own we can do diddly squat, together we can move mountains.”

Mr Robinson left to travel to Leicester, where he was filming for Time Team, and added that he hoped that the next time he came to Watford it would be for a football match.

“I'm hoping to see Watford play my team, Bristol City. We're like old lovers, we meet up and have an, intense relationship and then go our separate ways.”

MP Claire Ward outlined her campaign message, and gave her support to the Watford Health Campus.

“I'm determined we are going to see that hospital built, that hospital that we campaigned so hard for. I will not rest until they start to build the Watford Health Campus.”

Ms Ward also supported the Labour manifesto, in particular the extension to paternity leave for fathers, for toddler tax credit, and for stronger anti-social behaviour legislation.

She added: “I'm delighted to see so many of you tonight, when I was first elected this room was only half-full, so I'm actually expecting my majority to increase on May 6.”

Watford Liberal Democrats also held a meeting to formally adopt Sal Brinton as their candidate for the General Election at St Luke's Church.

The guest speaker was Simon Hughes, an MP since 1983, and a former President of the Liberal Democrats.

Clearly the Fib Dems live in Lala land.

When we wake up on the Friday after polling day we know one thing for certain, it won't be to a Fib Dem Government.

If there is a hung Parliament it will only last a short while because the majority party (you can be certain it won't be Fib Dem) will simply return to the country for a clear mandate to govern.

Good choice Time Team for a team whose time is up. Can someone please get Arthur to change his record? Most countries in Europe and beyond run perfectly well with concensus politics. It is the UK which is out of step and (sadly) out of money.

Flyinghornet is obviously into the realms of a space cadet.

I saw Claire Ward in Lynch's with Tony Robinson and about 7pm and left when they did to go to the meeting. Tony Robinson left early because he was filming at the crack of dawn this morning in Leicester.

When I popped into Lynch's after the meeting, I noticed Claire, her husband and a couple of other Labour, definitely no Tony Robinson.

I did think that I caught a glimpse of someone slumped in the corner obviously out of it, was that you flyinghornet? I was surprised because Jim doesn't allow that kind of thing.

Clearly someone else living in Lala land. Doubtless their favourite TV program is Fantasy Island (what was the name of that little fellow?)

Get real, we have a different electoral system. Look at history if you want to know the likely outcome of a hung Parliament. In recent times the only occasion we had a coalition government was during WW2.

As for out of money, according to the Paris based OECD think-tank, UK growth will outstrip Germany, Japan and the US this year, thanks to Alistair Darling.

Osborne, isn't that some kind of biscuit? More's the pity Cable left the Labour Party with the gang of four. He'd be quite an asset in Government, I don't understand why he's thrown his lot in with these no-hopers. Maybe he just hasn't got the balls for it.

Winston, it is notable that you claim to live in Bushey, if this is true then your MP is James Clappison, not Claire Ward.

I've already listed the 50 things that Claire Ward has done for Watford, but if you insists:

1. A rising National Minimum Wage - the annual uprating benefits for million people every year.
2. The shortest waiting times since NHS records began.
3. Three million more operations carried out each year than in 1997, with more than double the number of heart operations

The current National debt is just over 50% of our annual GDP. In case you haven't noticed our "Socialist" Government ran up this debt bailing out your capitalist friends, because if they hadn't as Cameron recommended we would all be completely in the doodoo now.

This level of National Debt is not a great deal more that when Maggie Snatcher was in power and it is a great deal less that we had at the end of WW2 when it was just shy of 240% of our GDP.

The simple question is, do you have a mortgage? Youngsters these days, when they can get one, regularly have mortgages which represent 4 times their joint income, in other words 400% of their gross annual income.

Against this background just over 50% is chicken feed. Have a look at your own mortgage and compare it to your annual income.

Like Cameron, self-styled "enlightenedone", who in reality seems to be just another Hooray Henry trying to scare us, is not very enlightened at all and seemingly hoping to gain credence by using "cap-shift" writing.

Doesn't work on me old chap.

What does work for me is Alastair Darling's brilliant handing of this undoubted crisis.

As "Arthur" rightly points out UK growth under Alastair's steady stewardship is likely to exceed that of Germany, Japan and the US according to the Paris based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and I 'd rather put my faith in their qualified opinion than some dork who styles himself as "enlightened".

So there's a good chap run along to nurse and get her to give you some more of those happy pills, because things will only get better under Labour however uncomfortable that may make you feel.

Au contraire, Slackbladder!!! You forgot to add the wars in Iraq and other faraway places that Labour has embroiled us in and and MP's needing to buy another home nearer to Westminster because they don't travel well, (about 20 miles I guess). I'd also like someone to tell me what their definition of 'free' is, eg. 'free' swimming. I've always believed that you never get something for nothing but it seems that some deluded correspondents believe otherwise. What about the PCSO funding that Labour pulled the plug on and then asked you to fund via your council tax. As I see it you already pay a large amount to the police so this is just another stealth tax that they hope no-one notices.

Winston, has it not dawned on you that as a Government Minister Claire Ward was instrumental in every single one of Labour's achievements that I listed?

Watford is not an isolated enclave, so we residents also benefit from every single one, except of course pensioners and youngsters who thanks to the intransigence of our Mayor are denied access to free swimming, unlike those residents in Three Rivers who often enjoy their free swimming in a pool in the Borough of Watford - how daft is that?

When we wake up on May 7th we know one thing for sure, we will not have a Lib Dem Government; it will be either Labour or Tory. If the government do not have a clear majority they will simply return to to Country in due course to secure a clear majority. So any idea that Nick Clegg will have any long term influence is as ludicrous as him forming a government.

As a carer, what you should think about is who, on balance, will give you the best deal, Labour or Tory? Realistically that won't be the Tories because there the ones who look after "rich" people like their prospective candidate for Watford.

Whoever you are caring for will have a state-of-the art Medical complex right here in Watford if you return a Labour MP. If you don't then everything is up for review and Mike Penning the Tory Health spokeman and MP for Hemel will do his level best to unpick everything and fragment the service, moving bits of it back to Hemel.

The whole idea of the Medical Complex is to have all the serious specialist under one roof and immediately available, not half of them in Hemel or St Albans. Most of the time A&E deals with minor injuries and the facilities in Hemel will continue to do just that.

We have an excellent ambulance service staffed by experts in their field. They are able to get anyone who is seriously ill to Watford Hospital very quickly from any where in the catchment area and stabilise them while they are doing that. Once there the patients will all have far better help that can be administered under the present system. We already have a new £50 million cardiac unit which is saving more lives daily. Not only that but patients are experiencing less trauma and outcomes are much, much better.

It's not really a hard choice is it?

Obviously you're thick, so there is no point in discussing this any further. It might be a good idea for you to purchase a dictionary. That way at least you'll be able to improve your written English; if you can do that who knows what the future holds? You may even be able to engage your brain before opening your mouth.

You're wrong

BTW I am dyslexic but since we live in an age of spellchecker and the WO site highlights all spelling mistakes even if you suffer from dyslexia, which I note you can spell correctly, there's no excuse for this slovenly behaviour.

Are a Tory Toff pretending to be thick or simply a Lib Dem fibber?

Directions to Parliament Square for Claire Ward.
Junction 5 M1, ten minutes to staples corner, pick up Claremont road, cross over Cricklewood Lane and continue as the crow flys to Mill Lane, turn left towards West End Lane, turn right and head towards Abbey Road and then Lisson Grove, cross Marylebone Road and drive the full length of Seymour Place, then turn left and then turn right into Great Cumberland Place to Marble Arch, drive down Park Lane to Hyde Park Corner, take second exit, Constitution Hill, comply QVM, turn left into Bird Cage Walk, forward into Great George Street to Parliament Square.
Time outside of the rush hour, approx 45 mins.
A little birdie tells me Claire Ward new the way and how long it took all the time, but decided she could make a killing buying a second home close to Parliament Square at the taxpayers expense and wasn't interested in being a commuter like Mr and Mrs average.

Rochdale under pressure: How the Home Office was warned Gillan Duffy's town is at risk of race riotsBy Neil Sears- daily mail
Last updated at 5:48 PM on 28th April 2010

When grandmother Gillian Duffy suggested immigration was a problem in Rochdale, she was swiftly dismissed as a 'bigot' by Gordon Brown.
But the Prime Minister was betraying not only his real feelings about the worries of millions of Britons, but also his ignorance of what has been going on in the northern town - which provides an acute case study of issues afflicting the whole nation.
For ethnic populations in Rochdale, ten miles north of Manchester, have been rising so fast that the Home Office has been warned it is at risk of race riots, and the council has had to draw up a special housing plan for minorities.
The Falinge area of Rochdale which had the highest number of benefit claimants in Britain
Government research last year showed more than a quarter of primary school pupils in Rochdale spoke English as a foreign language - and named one school. Heybrook Primary, where every single one of the 453 pupils spoke English as a second language.
More...Gordon goes back to grovel in person to life-long Labour voter he called a 'bigot' for complaining about immigration

Large scale immigration to the town began in the post-war years, when thousands of Asians arrived to work in dozens of cotton mills.
Gillian Duffy was called a 'bigoted woman' by Gordon Brown when she quizzed him about immigration in Rochdale
The mills have now gone, but the Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslims who came to work in them have remained, along with their children and grandchildren.
And census figures have shown that while the white population is actually falling by 2.3 per cent a decade, thanks to high birth rates the Asian population is doubling every 20 years. One church has reacted by offering services in Urdu and Punjabi.
Statistics produced in 2006 counted 16,000 people of Pakistani-origin in Rochdale, one in twelve of the population, along with 3,100 Bangladeshis, and another 8,000 non-whites.
On top of that there were another 5,000 eastern Europeans and other non-British whites.
Yet even in the four years since those figures were produced, the ethnic minority numbers have grown rapidly.
For the opening of European Union borders has led to ever larger numbers of Poles and other eastern Europeans coming to take up low-paid jobs in the town.

The Daily Mail found that numerous Poles were working in a Woolworths depot in Rochdale, while sleeping up to 13-at-a-time in cramped terrace houses.
Rochdale Borough Council recently produced a special 'Black and Minority Ethnic' housing strategy for the town 'in recognition of the increasing ethnic diversity in Rochdale' and the minorities' 'level of housing need'.
In addition to the Asians established locally for decades, the document goes on, there are 'newer and emerging ethnic minority groups' making up the 'refugee and asylum seeker communities for Africa, Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries', as well as eastern Europeans, mainly Poles.
The council document notes: 'In 2007, Rochdale borough had a black and minority ethnic population of 12 per cent, which is projected to increase to 20 per cent by 2021.'
Boarded up shops in Rochdale's main shopping strip last year
Three years ago it was reported that taxpayers were funding the refurbishment of 500 homes a year for asylum seekers in Rochdale - at a cost of £3,000 a time, with fittings including, freezers, microwaves and even ash trays.
Even before extra strain was placed on resources by the arrival of east Europeans and asylum seekers, recently released Home Office papers showed that in 2001 Rochdale was highlighted as potential race riot 'hot-spot' following violent anarchy in nearby Oldham.
And race relations in the town caused problems for Labour in the last General Election too, when it was claimed a raid on 25 suspected illegal immigrants on a council estate inundated by Africans had been postponed to avoid embarrassing Tony Blair.
