Election fever was brewing in Bushey this afternoon (Tuesday) as elderly residents of a care home were visited by Hertsmere Conservative MP James Clappison.

Mr Clappison attended the Beaumont Care Home, in High Street, to show his support to prospective Bushey St James councillor Denise Kieran.

The pair joined residents over tea and cake for a discussion about their views on the area before canvassing in nearby roads later in the afternoon.

Mr Clappison said: “I like to meet as many people as I can but particularly the older electorate – we must remember them.

“I think people all over the borough feel it is time for change. If I was re-elected I would be focusing strongly on the preservation of the green belt.”

Former Queens' School teacher Mrs Kieran introduced the Hertsmere MP, who has stood in the last four elections, and spoke of her experience canvassing for the first time.

“It is going really well - people have been really positive. I invited James here today so he could get to know the people he is representing in the ward.

“I'm looking to improve things for younger people in the area as well as get to know some of the elderly residents.”

After the meet and greet the Conservative party hopefuls set off to speak to nearby residents and businesses, leaving those in the care home deliberating over their vote.

Eve Young, 92, said: “He was a very nice man and came across very well. I would like to see him re-elected.”
