Members of Three Rivers District Council bade a fond farewell to four of their colleagues last night.

Meeting for the last time before the General Election, members briefly put political rivalries to one side to thank the men for their many years of hard work.

Outspoken Labour group leader Francis Durham, who is not seeking re-election to his Northwick seat, was warmly praised for his passionate, often controversial, contributions to council debates.

Council Leader Ann Shaw said: “You always have a sincere belief in whatever you say, even if we often disagree with you.”

Richard Struck, Liberal Democrat member for Maple Cross and Mill End, was stranded abroad because of volcano related flight restrictions. He is stepping down after 26 years of service.

Members praised his “diligence, hard work and knowledge.”

Leonard Spencer, Conservative member for Chorleywood East, is also standing down.

Councillor Shaw added: “He was tenacious, offered kindly and quiet support and always stood his ground.”

The chamber also gave warm applause to Liberal Democrat representative for Langleybury Keith Peutherer, who will also be standing down.
