Watford captain Jay DeMerit has been included in the USA’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad.

It is no surprise the 30-year-old was included after his superb displays in the Confederations Cup last year.

There were fears DeMerit may miss out due to the severe eye injury he suffered at the beginning of this season but despite an abdominal problem ruling him out of the last three matches this season, he has made the initial cut.

DeMerit will now have to report to Princeton on Saturday for the training camp and coach Bob Bradley will need to pick his final 23-man squad by June 1.

Bradley may opt to announce his squad before then though as the USA team are expected to fly out to South Africa on May 30.

If selected, DeMerit will face England on June 12 in Rustenburg, Slovenia on June 18 in Johannesburg and Algeria on June 23 in Pretoria.
