Radlett residents looking for a new twin town say they may have found just the place in a small Hungarian village just outside of Budapest.

The Radlett and Aldenham International Friendship Association (RAIFA) recently hosted a school choir from the town of Dunaharaszti, which performed at the Radlett Festival.

Already twinned with Lautertal, in Germany, for nearly 30 years and French town Louveciennes for 25 years, the Radlett organisation says it wants to “spice things up a bit”.

Chairman of RAIFA Clive Glover said the group was looking for a town in a former communist state and found that Radlett and Dunaharaszti shared many similarities.

He said: “We are both smaller, more rural towns, just outside of major cities. Having a twin town is really a cultural exchange. The benefits are really about making friendships with people from other countries to get a perspective of how they live – I suppose it broadens one's mind.”

The organisation is independent from Hertsmere Borough Council meaning the 100 or so members pay for their own international visits.

Art societies, choirs and schools from Germany, France and Hungary have made the trip to Radlett in the past few decades and Clive said he hopes the town has a lot to offer.

“I think the people of Radlett are very welcoming. I have no shortage of people willing to put up visiting students and it has a nice, traditional English village atmosphere.”

Clive is now waiting to meet with his Hungarian counterpart to discuss the possibility of twinning the towns, though he says this may not happen until early next year.
