A school assembley hall was filled with the sound of homemade vuvuzelas and didgeridoos as pupils marked the end of World Cup Week.

England may be out of the tournament but children at Highwood School, in Bushey Mill Lane, spent this week learning about participating countries and hosting their own tournament.

Year 3 teacher Claire Abbey organised the week's activities, during which the pupils learned about the culture and history of their chosen countries.

A football tournament between Years 3 to 6 was also held and the winning teams were presented with trophies in front of the whole school at last Friday’s (July 2) assembly.

Miss Abbey said it was important for the children to learn about the countries involved.

“It has been great and the kids have really enjoyed it. They got really in to the football tournament and were cheering each other along but it was also good for them to get an experience of other cultures.”

During the assembly, Year 4 sang a world cup song from Brazil, Year 5 gave a demonstration of a conversation in German and Year 6 sang the national anthem of tournament host South Africa.

Year 3, who were learning about Australia, finished their week with an afternoon barbecue.

Straining to be heard over a din of cardboard vuvuzelas, Miss Abbey added: “It was a real success and perhaps we will look at doing something similar for the olympics in 2012.”
