The redevelopment of two schools in south-west Hertfordshire will still go ahead, despite a government decision to scrap England’s national school improvement scheme.
Education Secretary Michael Gove yesterday (Monday) said 719 rebuilding projects that had not yet been signed off would now be scrapped, as part of a review of the previous Labour government’s Building Schools for the Future scheme.
However, the schools that have already been approved for funding will still be completed.
They include the Bushey Academy, in Bushey, and the Francis Combe Academy, in Garston.
The £29million plans for the Bushey Academy include the demolition of a large part of its current site, on the corner of London Road and Falconer Road.
These buildings would be replaced with state-of-the-art classrooms, a music centre, sports hall and other facilities.
The £25million building works at the Francis Combe Academy, in Horseshoe Lane, will see the main hall, gymnasiums and other external buildings demolished later this month, at the beginning of the summer holidays.
Pupils will then use temporary buildings until their new school has been built. The project is due to be completed by August 2012.
