Kodokan Kendo club from Rickmansworth win in Watford competition

A Kendo club from Rickmansworth took the edge at a charity competition this weekend.

The family event, where competing teams are made up of a junior, a lady, and a male, was won by Kodokan Kendo from Rickmansworth.

More than 60 combatants attended the event, held in Watford on Saturday, some traveling from Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Japan and Spain.

So far more than £1000 has been raised for Maggie's Centres and Macmillan Cancer Support by the event, as well as an additional £285 raised on the day from an auction.

Paul Budden, leader of Kodokan Kendo, said: “It’s a wonderful thing to behold when individuals come together to give something back, without expecting anything in return.”

On Saturday morning a junior competition took place and then in the afternoon there was a family team event and knockout competition.

Kendo is a skill derived from Japanese samurai, who would train using a wooden weapon instead of a dangerous blade to practice their sword skills.

The event will be held again next year, location and dates are to be announced later.

Kodokan Kendo club, which practices at The Royal Masonic School for Girls in Chorleywood Road, recently performed at the Hertfordshire Youth Games where 2000 competitors took part in various sporting activities throughout the day.
