An “inspirational” lawyer and youth worker was remembered on Saturday as his former friends and colleagues took part in a memorial football tournament.

More than 150 former players and spectators gathered in Bushey to remember the life of former youth mentor Dipen Patel, who died earlier this year.

Mr Patel, who drowned during a holiday to Brazil, worked as a mentor at Watford’s YMCA, where he helped troubled young people make the most of their lives.

The seven-a-side tournament, held at the Bushey Power League, in Aldenham Road, saw players from across the Watford area raise more than £5,000 for future youth projects at the YMCA.

Organiser and former school friend Ian Roberts explained: “Dipen was such an inspirational guy so we wanted to do something in his memory. He worked very long hours but still found time to help other people, because that was the kind of guy he was – he was a great example to everybody.

“He was passionate about helping young people and passionate about playing football so we thought we could combine the two with this tournament.

“It was very competitive at times but played in a very good spirit. The weather was perfect and we are delighted with how it went.”

Former schoolfriend Ben Carstairs added:" It was great to have Dipen's friends and family together to support a fantastic cause. I'm sure Dipen would have been pleased FC Inconsistent (the team he helped form) took home the trophy. It was a thoroughly successful day enjoyed by all.

Julia Collar, head of youth development at Watford YMCA, said: “I think we have raised nearly £6,000 so far, which is fantastic.

“At a time when we are struggling for funding that money is so important for us – it is enough to fund a six week training programme for young offenders. It’s really quite amazing what they achieved. Dipen was a remarkable man and he will be missed by us all.”

The event, which was won by the multi-talented players FC Inconsistent, concluded with a buffet, raffle and barbeque and was sponsored by Mr Patel’s former employers Sidley Austin, who have agreed to double any money raised.
