Members of a Watford angling club have celebrated their 125th anniversary in style, with an open day jam-packed with fun, food and fishing.

Taking advantage of the splendid sunshine, The Watford Piscators Angling Club was supported in their milestone celebrations by charity DRUM (Disability Recreation Unity Movement) as well as the local community.

For the past six years, the angling club has offered members of DRUM fishing lessons beside the River Colne in Tolpits Lane, and today was no different as both organisations came together for a spot of fishing and lunch.

Sarah Sullivan, manager at DRUM, explained how the Watford Piscators had made a difference to the lives of the charity’s members.

She said: “Over the years the Watford Piscators has been absolutely fantastic. It was thanks to their president John Castle that the two organisations were introduced – we’re all like old friends now.

"DRUM provides day services and support for adults with physical or sensory disabilities.

“Angling is really relaxing for our members and for some, who enjoyed fishing prior to their disability, it’s a chance to revisit a hobby or sport they thought they could no longer do.

“There’s also the fantastic surroundings and landscape – what better than a bit of fishing to feel relaxed.”

DRUM attendees as well as local teenagers were accompanied to fishing spots along the River Colne by stewards, to socialise and learn more about fishing.

Would-be anglers were provided with a rod and line, as well as some bait, but were under strict instruction that any carp caught had to be returned to the river.

Other visitors took time to enjoy a scrumptious slice of a hog roast, while listening to live music courtesy of a jazz band.

Jamie Wareham, club chairman, stressed that today’s celebrations were all-inclusive and that the society were trying to appeal to the larger community.

He said: “We like to hold an open day every year, and in previous years it has been mainly to support DRUM.

“But this year, to coincide with our milestone anniversary, we wanted to do something bigger and better than before – we wanted to invite the whole community to see what the Watford Piscators has to offer.

“It’s been tremendous fun, and there’s been a really great turnout, particularly from the local youngsters who seem to have expressed a keen interest in angling.

“As for the anniversary itself, well I couldn’t be more proud to be part of the club’s landmark celebrations - I believe we’re one of the longest running in the area.”
