Local Alcohol Profiles for England released today by North West Public Health Observatory

The level of alcohol related crime and binge drinking in Watford is still worse than the national average, despite Hertfordshire showing an overall improvement from last year.

Figures published today in this year's Local Alcohol Profiles for England, show Watford is currently the 8th worst performing area in the Eastern region for alcohol-attributable crime.

Watford also has significantly more binge drinkers than the national average. Mayor Dorothy Thornhill called this "a national problem experienced by all major towns" and blamed visitors to the town centre, rather than residents.

She added: "Watford attracts people from all over Hertfordshire and way beyond to its town centre bars and clubs, so it is no surprise that our figures are high. The majority of these people won't live in Watford.

“Together with the police we are doing everything we can to combat binge drinking.”

Recent initiatives include “All Together Watford”, which targeted people arriving in the town centre already drunk.

Neighbourhood Inspector Chris Bryce said the Community Safety Partnership, a group made up of Police, both councils, the Fire and Rescue Service, the Police Authority and the Primary Care Trust, was working to fix the problems that the popularity of Watford during the day and night brought.

He added: "The binge drinking culture is a national issue and we in Watford suffer from this no more then any other comparable town in the country.

"The Community Safety Partnership already has some very robust processes in place to deal with those who visit and misuse the town."

Watford is also second only to Norwich for the number of claimants of incapacity benefit or severe disablement allowance, where the main medical reason is alcoholism.

Dr Raymond Jankowski, deputy director of public health said: “These profiles give a clear picture of how drinking affects the population of Hertfordshire.

“It is good to see that in general, these figures show that Hertfordshire compares well to other areas of the country.

“There are some areas of real concern which the local NHS and its partners are working hard to address.”

The Local Alcohol Profiles for England were released today by the North West Public Health Observatory, which is based in the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University.

Neighbourhood Inspector Chris Bryce added: "The likely success of our long term objectives will mean an even safer, successful and enjoyable experience for visitors, local residents, business and the working community in Watford.”

Quite an achievement !
Not only is Watford one of the worst offending towns in eastern England for 'alcohol related crime', it also come second in the league of shame for number of people claming incapacity benefits because 'alcohol dependency'.
I'd be interested to learn what the exact figures are.
Still i'm sure in the next day or so Mayor Dorothy and Hertfordshire police will release a news article stating 'things really aren't that bad' in a vain attempt to put our minds at rest.

No wonder Watford is above the regional average. The fact that Watford is classed as being in the Eastern Region where most of the towns are in the countryside or are small villages!! Watford is basically in the London region and therefore the stats are more realistic. Most people who come to Watford are from either South West Herts or London. I'm not saying the stats are good but you have to look at things realistically and compared to most towns in or around London they aren't that terrible!

Like so many people living locally, I would never venture into Watford TC after dark. Perhaps so many people travel in from other areas because their behavior would not be tolerated on their own local high street?

Regardless of who we are compared with the situation is still not good. And the Mayor can not try and pass the buck to people coming in from out of the area as it is her policies regarding the so called entertainment sector of town by the pond that encourage this mass pilgramage to Watford. It would be interesting to see what the income is to the council for all these establishments and compare them with the extra cost to the town. I doubt the monetary income is greater than what has to be paid out as a consequence not just by the council, but the NHS, police and individuals. Also, why are people who are unable to work as they have drunk too much getting benefits? Surely if you are unable to work for a self inflicted reason such as this the rest of society shouldnt have to support you!

Basically the rot set in over ten years ago when the council encouraged the creation of a so-called'cafe culture' at the top of the town. That was always doomed. The problem was made worse when the government allowed much longer opening hours and restricted councils abilities to regulate their own town centres. Hardly a day goes by now without news of the problems caused by this right across the country.

Plain and simple, the reason Watford TC is a sh1thole is because there are too many places to DRINK.Just look at Wetherspoons and the time it opens......why is that you might ask.Wetherspoons will say one thing but the reason it open so early is so the p155heads can get started earlier, just look at the lowlife huddled round the door in the morning having a fag. They are certainly not captains of industry are they.Dotty has her name written all over the trouble facing the town centre these days.Ok the liberal licencing laws have not helped but just because a pub can stay open longer does not mean you have to let every application for a pub through.....Cafe society, what a laugh, for that we would have to re-educate our own society as its been proven in the past....YOU CANT POLISH A TURD.....and our society is 5hit.Go to any other country in the world and you will not find anyone who behaves like us(unless you go to where we go on holiday)....

Way to go Madam Mayor-

"Watford attracts people from all over Hertfordshire and way beyond to its town centre bars and clubs, so it is no surprise that our figures are high. The majority of these people won't live in Watford.''

No but they'll cause trouble which will clog up the valuable A&E and make the town generally unusable when the sun goes down, like some grim horror film. You provided an oasis for these people to come in and abuse our town and when they're finished go back to wherever they came from. They're not council tax payers but our money is used to police them and then clean the streets the following day. I don't care about the national averages or what happens elsewhere, this is our town and it's been turned into a cesspit.

The mayor and the police need to pull their heads out of the sand and realise there is a real problem with our town and it's of their own making. Their constant use of the term 'nightime economy' obviously legitimises the town centre's problems in their eyes but it makes it a no-go area for the rest of us. Try taking your children out for an early evening meal in the town and then explaining to them why the air is full of drunken malevolence when you leave the restaurant. Chances are they'll also pick up some choice new words on the way back to your car as well.

I've never heard of a politician, whether they're an MP or councillor, being so ambivalent to the serious issues of alcohol abuse and the impact on a community as this mayor. It makes me curious as to the nature of her blind spot where this matter is concerned. There is simply no justification for what's happened to our town and the quicker the town hall understands this the better off we will all be.

Perhaps she needs to make a reconnaissance visit to the town centre on a saturday night around 11:30pm followed by a visit to A&E to see the true outcome of our fun nightime economy.
