Dozens of shoppers gathered on Watford High Street today, eagerly awaiting the opening of a new shop.

Fashion retailer Life & Style, opened its second store in the former location of Woolworths, attracting a queue of about 50 curious shoppers.

A ribbon was cut at 1pm by chairman of Watford Borough Council, councillor Alan Burtenshaw before the crowd was let loose in the new store.

The branch employs 35 members of staff and chain owners Elaine McPherson and Suresh Ruia said they had been looking to open a store in Watford for about a year.

“It is nice to finally be in Watford, it is a perfect match and it is nice to fill the gap left by the former Woolworths store.”

The first 500 customers were given gift vouchers for the store, which promises to provide “fashion for the family and fashion for the home”.

One customer, Kathy Bailie, said she was pleased to see the empty eyesore finally filled.

“It is looking better. I've been looking forward to the new shop and it is looking lovely.”
