More than 40,000 people flocked to an Aldenham temple today to take part in the biggest Hare Krishna festival in the world outside of India.
Janmashtami, a festival celebrating the birth of Krishna, brought traffic to a standstill on the A41 as people flocked to Bhaktivedanta Manor Temple, in Hilfield Lane.
Visitors were treated to free vegetarian food and a lively atmosphere that featured dancing, music, activities and prayer.
Kishor Varia, visiting the temple with his family, said it was a combination of religion, culture and atmosphere that brings so many people back each year.
“You do not have to follow the Hare Krishna movement to get something out of this festival. It is brilliant. Everyone is here enjoying themselves, celebrating and praying.”
The event was held over two days, the first being Thursday, with a weekend celebration to allow more people to take part.
Anishka Thakrar, 18, said the event gives people of all generations somewhere to get together.
“It is open and approachable, everyone feels comfortable no matter what their beliefs. Every year we come and enjoy the day and it is fantastic.”
The celebrations are set to continue until 10pm this evening.
