BBC Breakfast host Bill Turnbull agreed to host a charity ball after he was cornered leaving the toilet of a central London department store.
Former Strictly Come Dancing star Mr Turnbull was in John Lewis when he was asked by Lesley Ralston, chairman of the south Hertfordshire branch of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association, to attend the organisation's annual fundraising event next month.
Lesley said: “I saw Bill and thought this is the perfect opportunity to ask him if he will help support families in Hertfordshire who are affected by MND.
“MND is a cruel, fatal disease for which there is no cure. This means that we must do all that we can to raise money to help fund more research.
“Bill was a great sport and despite my rather unusual way of inviting him to our event, he has kindly agreed to be our special guest on the night.”
Mr Turnbull added: “I know that MND is a devastating disease and apart from the fact that I was nabbed by Lesley outside the gents in John Lewis, it’s a very good cause and I’m happy to contribute in some small way.”
The ball will be held on Saturday, October 2 at The Noke Thistle Hotel in St Albans.
Tickets, which cost £50 per person, include a champagne reception, three-course dinner, live music and an auction.
