Hare Krishna followers officially opened a new farm in Aldenham this weekend which they hope will soon be producing the UK's most expensive pint of milk.

Followers at the Bhaktivedanta Manor Temple, in Hilfield Lane, unveiled New Gokul, a £2.5million ethically-run farm during Diwali celebrations on Saturday.

Described as “the Hilton of farms”, the pampered cows are hand-milked accompanied by soothing music and are allowed to live out their full lives.

Although the farm is not legally able to commercially sell the special 'Ahimsa' milk yet, owners hope to offer it to consumers at the inflated price of £1.70 a pint soon.

Special guests at Saturday's ceremony included Hertsmere MP James Clappison and Hertsmere Mayor and Bushey councillor Linda Silver.

Sita Rama das, of the temple, said: “This premium milk, presently used in many products available in Bhaktivedanta Manor, will offer consumers the chance to avoid buying from an industry which is based around slaughter and suffering, and instead buy from a fresh, new and compassionate alternative."

The farm caters for 20 bulls and 24 cows and produces 1,000 litres of milk a week.

Diwali, the Hindo festival of light, was marked on Sunday at the temple by the release of hundreds of Chinese lanterns.

Before each one was released into the night sky, a prayer for world peace in ancient Sanskrit was recited by priests.

Highlights of the festival included colourful dances, plays and free vegetarian meals for everyone.

Radha Mohan Das, from the manor, said: “The weather held out on both days, which was lucky for us, especially with the weather forecast for this week.

“There was a real sense of community and fun combined. We had about 10,000 people there through the day.

“The opening of the new farm on Saturday was a great success and we were joined by some wonderful guests who gave some emotional and powerful speeches.”
