Armed Forces veterans stood shoulder-to-shoulder with relatives of servicemen and women killed in conflict during a ceremony to mark Armistice Day today (Thursday).

The crowds that gathered at the war memorial in Vicarage Road Cemetery in Watford fell silent at 11am to observe a two minute silence.

A service was then led by Reverend Canon Dick Lewis, from Christ Church and St Mark's, in Leggatts Way, during which Harry Reynolds, chairman of the Watford branch of the Royal Naval Assocation, read Laurence Binyon's Ode to Remembrance.

Among the guests were Sue and Martyn Sawyer, the parents of Watford soldier Captain Tom Sawyer, who was killed in Afghanistan in January 2009.

Members of the Watford branch of the Fleet Air Arm Association and the Royal British Legion were also present, alongside Councillor Alan Burtenshaw, chairman of Watford Borough Council.
