The future of Aldenham Country Park was given a boost last night when members of Hertsmere Borough Council pledged to try and save the condemned site.

Leader of the Council Morris Bright told members he felt the park was “worth saving” and would be “seriously missed” if it were to close.

On Tuesday, members of Hertfordshire County Council voted to close the park, the main entrance to which is in Aldenham Road, as the authority looks to slash £150million from its annual budget.

Speaking to members at last night's full council meeting, in Borehamwood, Councillor Bright said: “I want to offer an opportunity to everyone to get round the table and keep this valuable site open by pulling together our money and resources.

“This is a very good example where we can do something about it. I believe we have a chance here but it needs some investigating.”

The park is owned by Hertfordshire County Council while the on-site reservoir is being leased by the authority until 2015.

Conservative councillor Simon Patnick (Aldenham West) said the news of the park's closure was “deeply concerning”, describing the site as “one of Hertsmere's jewels”.

He added: “I believe it can still be saved and I would welcome the council's best efforts to achieve this.”

Conservative Councillor Brenda Batten (Bushey Heath) said she remembered spending time in the park with her children and grandchildren and echoed the sentiments of the previous speakers.

Leader of the Liberal Democrat group Roger Kutchinsky (Bushey North) said: “It would be a great shame of it was to go to waste – and that is what it would be, a waste. We have a facility there that may need some money and it would be a terrible shame if we were not able to provide it.”

Morris Bright concluded the discussions promising he would “instigate a meeting as soon as possible” to look at the issue, adding that he took “great support” from the members' comments.
